Trash, illegally dumped furniture piles up as Marquette students move out

Every year, at the end of the school year, the area of 20th and Clybourn is covered in trash and unwanted furniture.

If you’re walking on West Clybourn Street near South 20th Street, you’ll likely notice heaping piles of trash overflowing out of bins along the sidewalk. Every year, around the time college students are moving, this same area suffers from mounds of trash and illegal dumping. Food, containers, mattresses, couches and everything else will line the apartment buildings, sidewalks and alleys. Last year, WISN 12 covered the same problem in the same spot. This year was no different. Many of the buildings in the area are filled with college students living off campus, close to Marquette University. Marquette does provide dumpsters outside of residence halls, but it’s unclear what the university does for off-campus housing. When WISN 12 did this story last year, the Department of Public Works said it’s up to property owners to clean up trash on their properties. However it is unclear if that rule still applies when the trash overflows onto public sidewalks and alleys. The manager of the apartment building did not immediately respond to WISN 12’s request for comment.

Fight blight with Whole Home Repairs

Fri May 27 , 2022
Among Pennsylvania’s many distinctions, the commonwealth has one of the nation’s oldest housing stocks — half of all homes in the state were built before 1959. These old buildings are brimming with architectural character, but redbrick rowhomes and majestic Victorians require lots of maintenance and can be difficult to retrofit […]
