Building a new business | Business

Lincoln County is home to a new licensed residential general contractor. Galen Farrel opened Farrel Home Repair and Renovations recently after running a similar business in Hawaii. He and his fiancée relocated to the Oregon coast in January after she was offered a job at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in South Beach.

Licensed and bonded, Farrel specializes primarily in carpentry — both rough, such as framing new construction of a house and drywall, and finish work, such as baseboard molding, trim, tiling and windows. “I also do drywall repair, kitchen and bath remodels and flooring upon request,” Farrel said, adding he can also oversee project management.

For the most part, Farrel works alone and does all the work himself, and he doesn’t see that changing in the immediate future. “There are many jobs that are too big,” he said. “I don’t deal with new home construction but can build small additions. I don’t deal with big concrete work, though I can handle the contracting of that as a general contractor.”

Farrel said he has heard complaints that it is difficult to get service providers in this area but said he does his best to be timely and responsive to inquiries during his business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“I am really pleased to be in this area and offering what services I can,” Farrel said. “Although I specialize in the carpentry realm, I have some skills in a lot of areas. I am glad to offer my services to customers who are interested. Customers can always call and ask if the work they need is something I can provide.”

Farrel said moving to the coast is a great opportunity both professionally and personally. “I have a brother in Bandon, so it’s nice to be closer to family,” he said. “And we love living by the ocean.” Neither Farrel nor his fiancée were concerned about the rainy winters on the Oregon coast. “Hilo is among the wettest places on the planet as far as rainfall,” he said of his former residence. “We are accustomed to rainy days, but the cold weather is a bit of an adjustment. But it is such a lovely place, and we are enjoying all the recreational opportunities.”

Based out of Toledo, Farrel’s coverage area is most of Lincoln County and could go farther depending on the job. To contact Farrel Home Repair and Renovations for a consultation and bid on a project, call 541-351-8431 or email [email protected] Visit for more information.
